Colonoscopy For Colon Cancer Screening

Personal medical history, family history and age are some of the main factors that determine the necessity of a colon cancer screening. At a minimum, it is recommended for anyone 50 years or older to begin testing for colon cancer. If the examination doesn’t reveal any areas of concern, patients generally only need follow-up exams every ten years.

During a colonoscopy a Gastronenterologist examines the colon with a small camera attached to the end of a thin flexible tube. The camera transits images in real time and potential issues can be visually diagnosed. The procedure also provides an opportunity for biopsy or removal of small polyps–which may contain cancer or be the cause of rectal discomfort. If you are experiencing pain or bleeding in the rectal area, a colonoscopy is strongly advised.

North Houston Gastroenterology Clinic and Houston Colon Cancer Screening Center provides full colonoscopy services. Dr. Winston and his staff of experienced Houston gastroenterologists can help alleviate any concerns you might have related to colon cancer or intestinal discomfort. Colon cancer screenings are available for patients in Houston, The Woodlands and surrounding areas.
